On August 23, 1915, French artillery general Eugene Estienne famously wrote “Gentlemen, the victory in this war will belong to which of the two belligerents which will be the first to place a gun of 75mm on a vehicle able to be driven on all terrain”. Thirty years later in 1945, the biggest war in the history of man was being fought with hundreds of all-terrain vehicles carrying these 75mm guns. Unfortunately, the French high command was reluctant to take advantage of such forward thinking, and in 1940 capitulated to the Nazi army. The German generals themselves had based much of their famous blitzkrieg tactics on the writings of Estienne and De Gaulle. Their lessons had been learned, but not by who they had wanted, and in the end the stubbornness of the high command caused them to be defeated by the strategies of their own men.
